Traffic rules in Montenegro

Driver's license and minimum driving age in Montenegro

 

Type of driver's license:

 

According to the Road Traffic Safety Law of Montenegro (article 176), entered into force on January 2013, citizens of EU countries, citizens of Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway,

SAD, Latin American countries and others may drive or ride motor vehicles with valid foreign or national driving license for the period of their temporary residence in Montenegro.

All versions and styles of driving licenses are valid if they are valid on the territory of the country issuing these licenses.

Also Montenegro recognizes International Driving Permit (IDP) according to the Convention on Road Traffic (1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic). To be valid, the IDP must be accompanied by a valid driving license.

All countries that are signatories to the 1968 Convention and many other countries that are not signatories to it recognize the International Driving Permit and accept it in their territory.

 

Driver:

Minimum driving age in Montenegro - 18 years, the driver must have a valid driver's license.

 

 

The speed limit in Montenegro

 

In Montenegro, the traffic regulations are generally in line with those of member states of the European Union.

 

The speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h, unless, due to road conditions, traffic signs indicate a speed limit of up to 80 km/h.

 

City: 50 km / h

 

Outside the city: 80 km / h

 

Major roads: 100 km / h

 

Highways: 120 km / h

 

In the summer there are many mobile CCTV cameras for speed control in residential areas of Montenegro.

 

 

Driving in Montenegro

 

Traffic:

 

• Drive on the right-hand side of the road in Montenegro;

• Do not exceed the speed limit;

• Dipped headlights must be switched on when driving in the daytime;

• Entering drivers give way to traffic within the roundabout;

• Overtaking is permitted only on the left side;

• Forbidden dark tinting on rear, side and door windows of all vehicles, except if this is a factory tint.

 

Driver:

 

• Drivers and front seat passengers, as well as passengers in the back if there are seat belts must wear seat belts;

• Blood alcohol limits for drivers - 0.3 mg/ml;

• Do not use radar detectors as their installation;

• Drivers have to have passports on them;

• The driver of a vehicle must not use a mobile phone while the vehicle is moving. This does not apply, however, to hands-free devices.

 

Passengers:

 

• Passengers must wear seat belts;

• Children under 5 years old should be transported in a special child seats;

• Kids 12 and under should always be in the back seat.

 

Parking

 

There is mainly paid parking in cities.

Parking charges depend on the area, season and term of parking.

Season parking charges vary from 0.8 euros to 2 euros per hour, the price for parking in winter varies from 0.6 euros to 1 euro per hour.

In Montenegro in every seaside town there is a municipal cars evacuation service. It works the days away and takes away vehicles which are wrongly parked. Vehicle towing penalty is up 90 euros and plus 5 euros for parking for each additional day.

If the driver comes before the vehicle towing, he can save 65 euros.

Parking areas outside the parking zones are indicated by standard traffic signs, have no time limit and parking is paid for on an hourly or daily basis. Parking charges are usually only applicable to certain times of day. Outside these times, parking is free (e.g. in the late evening and at weekends).

 

 

Car insurance and road tolls

 

• If you don't have vehicle insurance, you can't drive in Montenegro;

• To enter Montenegro, drivers of vehicles with foreign number plates need to have insurance policy (green card). The Green Card is an international document certifying the issue of automobile insurance against damage caused to third parties abroad.

• Drivers of cars with foreign number plates who do not have a green card must purchase border car insurance from a local insurance company at the border when entering Montenegro.

• Road tolls are payable on the following routes: tunnel Sozina, ferry Lepetani-Kamenari. 

 

Fines

 

Fines for traffic violations in Montenegro:

 

• Running a Red Light - 70-250 euros;

• Using the mobile phones when driving - 50 euros;

• If you drink more than 0.3 mg/ml - 100-350 euros;

• Speeding – 50-150 euros;

• Headlights are switched off - 50 euros;

• Crossing the solid line – 70-300 euros.

 

 

Fuel

 

On the main traffic routes and in larger towns and cities there are petrol stations which operate 24 hours a day. Almost every large petrol station sells all types of fuel and motor oils, both locally-produced and imported, as well as food, drink and vehicle accessories.
